From a young age, there were many examples of detective series or adventure series where bondage played an occasional fleeting (however exciting they may have been, but they tended to be a bit symbolic rather than depicting bondage and gagging that would work) part. There was enough to whet the appetite, but for the best small screen bondage scenes, 'Prisoner Cell Block H' took some beating.
It seemed every other week they were at it, sometimes with on-screen gagging and stuffing.
Still bordered on the lightweight, but far more effective than most other affairs.

Now, in my case, it has to eb the ITC series from the 60's and 70's - The Baron, The Saint, The Protectors, The Champions, and so on and so on. They always seemed to have a slightly more realistic edge.
In fact, seventies TV had a more open view on what was allowed and not. One that stayed with me for a long time was a kid's Sunday series called Quest for Eagles, set in the Polish Commuinty in Newcastle, and starring a young Gina MacKee who ended up in trouble on a boat in one episode. |

I don't know if it was a reflex from the official Censorship rules (that lasted until mid 80's) or what else, but for years the bondage shown in movies, soap operas and tv-series was not very good.
Either the damsel wasn't really gagged (to the point that she could clearly speak) like in 'Pluft, o Fantasminha' (Pluft the Little Ghost).
Or when she was well gagged she was unrealistic tied up like in the first version of 'Selva de Pedra' (Stone Jungle) in which the heroine seems to have been loosley bound with two miles of rope over and to a mattress at one point.
Or when she was well tied up and gagged there was an humor element in the scene to soften her distress, like in an episode of 'Armação Ilimitada' (Unlimited Deals) that paid an homage to Alfred Hitchcock, in the end of the episode the heroine discovers who is killing the women without leaving any clues or corpses behind and is captured by the killer, who then take her along as he goes to kill the last one in his list. She's shown realistically gagged and tied (even with the hands in front), but at some point (when the killer explain why he had kill all the women and burst into tears while doing it) she uses her hands to try to confort him!
But little by little the bondage scenes became more realistic, yes there are still amateurishly tied upo and or gagged damsels and there are scenes in which for some rerason they put a 'laughing factor' in the middle of it.
But they are turning out to be the exception and not the rule. |
